Can’t Kobe Just Pray in Peace?!?

No Pictures Please!

“It’s crazy how you can go from being Joe Blow
To everybody on your d***, no homo
I bought my whole family whips, no Volvos
Next time I’m in church, please no photos”

Kanye West on Run This Town from Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 (2009)

Kobe is no Saint

Anyone who knows me, has read any of my articles and/or has heard me on HoopSmack podcast shows knows that a Kobe fan, I am not. But when I first caught wind of this story, I looked beyond Kobe (the self-centered basketball player) and saw a man distracted while looking for spiritual improvement.

St. Therese of Carmel Church

According to 10news.com in San Diego, a man claims to have been injured by the NBA superstar during a Sunday service over the matter of a camera phone. While attending St. Therese of Carmel in Carmel Valley, Kobe Bryant suspected the young man was snapping photos of him and took the phone from him allegedly injuring the man in the process. Upon discovering no photos in the phone, Bryant returned the device to the guy and immediate left service. It has been reported that the man (identity withheld) later went to a hospital with what is described as a minor wrist sprain. The San Diego police intend on interviewing Kobe regarding the incident. Hopefully they can get an inside scoop on his decision to play overseas!

I know tons of people are either going to defend Kobe to oblivion or persecute him like the adulteress (if you’re not hip, read your bible). There’s fault to be shared, so here’s how I access the situation:

Kobe believes man is taking his picture- Instead of grabbing the phone away from the man, Kobe should have alerted the nearest usher. Allow the ushers to do their job which one duty is keeping order during service.

The guy had his phone out during service- Instead of being a distraction during service; he should have approached Kobe immediately after service for a photo if that was indeed his goal. Kobe’s a people person so I’m sure he would have agreed. And even if he didn’t, you wouldn’t have an alleged sprained wrist as a result.

Romans 3:10 states, “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one’” which means no one is perfect. And this incident is living proof. Mistakes happen. We all have the “right” answers after the fact because hindsight is always 20/20 vision. So let this be a lesson learned. They say a picture’s worth a 1000 words… I wonder what no picture and a sprained wrist is worth?!?
